Tracy City attorney accepts new appointment with santa maria
May 31st to be Thomas Watson’s Last Day with the City of Tracy

Tracy, Calif. – Tracy’s City Attorney, Thomas Watson, has announced that he has accepted the position of City Attorney with the City of Santa Maria. Mr. Watson has 30 years of legal experience and began his career with the City of Tracy on November 15, 2017.

It has been an honor and a privilege to work with you,” stated Thomas Watson in a City-wide message to Tracy employees. “This city is blessed to have this devoted staff. I appreciated my time here serving the residents of Tracy.”

The City Attorney’s Office does a lot of work behind-the-scenes, supporting all City departments –”their success is our success,” Mr. Watson said. He managed a team of legal talent that has been responsible for all litigation and providing legal advice to Council, including but not limited to those related to planning, land use, CEQA initiatives, elections and utilities. The City Attorney’s Office recently acquired new web-based public records software to increase transparency and efficiency in responding to requests and another notable success during Mr. Watson’s tenure was the work he and the City Attorney’s Office team did to address the old Long John Silver’s building that had become an eyesore in the community. The City Attorney’s Office has also built a strong partnership with the City of Tracy Planning Division, working cooperatively and collaboratively with local developers on many big projects currently underway and on the horizon.

“We appreciate Mr. Watson’s contributions to our community and wish him the best in his new position with the City of Santa Maria,” said Mayor Robert Rickman.

Thomas Watson is a graduate of Santa Clara University and has served in numerous government capacities since 1989. He specializes in municipal law and construction litigation. Prior to his employment with the City of Tracy, Mr. Watson served as the City Attorney for South Lake Tahoe. He has also acted in a contract capacity for six cities within Fresno and Tulare Counties, and established a private construction litigation firm, representing various clients in the Central Valley. He also served as Deputy County Counsel for Tulare County from 1992 to 1994.

Mr. Watson is anticipated to begin his duties with the City of Santa Maria on Monday, June 17, 2019.
