PR - Tracy Water System Undergoes Annual Disinfection Change
Posted: Feb 7, 2019TRACY WATER SYSTEM UNDERGOES ANNUAL DISINFECTION CHANGE
Dialysis facilities advised to make necessary adjustments
Tracy, Calif. – The City of Tracy is actively notifying local health care facilities, which treat patients undergoing hemodialysis, of upcoming changes to its drinking water disinfection practices. Beginning June 1, 2018, Tracy’s drinking water conveyance system will change from free available chlorine to combined chlorine (chloramines). Chloramines are created by adding ammonia that then combines with the chlorine as the drinking water leaves the treatment plant. Chlorine will still be used as the primary disinfectant: however, chloramines will be used as the secondary disinfectant in the water distribution system when treating source water from the Delta Mendota Channel. Chloramines are a Federal and State approved disinfectant used in drinking water to remove bacteria and viruses. During this process, Tracy’s drinking water will continue to meet Federal and State standards for safe drinking water; however, health care facilities should make any necessary adjustments to dialysis equipment to compensate for this change in the City’s disinfection type. Dialysis patients should contact their physicians or dialysis centers if they have any questions or concerns.
