City of Tracy Requests Community's Help in Stopping Illegally Posted Signage

Posted: Jun 25, 2015
Location: Tracy, Calif.

With garage sale season at its peak, the City of Tracy is encouraging the public to refrain from posting signs and advertisements on public poles, street signs, street trees and in the public right-of-way. Posting signs on public property is prohibited by the Tracy Municipal Code, as it causes community blight and safety hazards for drivers.

“Our goal is to encourage residents to use other methods of advertisement to promote garage sales and events; a significant amount of time is used to remove signage on public property and any residue left behind,” stated Public Works Director, David Ferguson. “The resources used to remove illegal signage can be better spent on addressing essential services that the community relies on.”

As an alternative to posting garage sales signs, the public is encouraged to consider running an ad in the local newspaper, or through online ads, local garage sale websites, and social media sites.

This summer, youth from San Joaquin County WorkNet, Youth Employment and Training Program will be assisting crews with the removal of illegal signage in Tracy and developing other work-related experience in the Public Works Department.

The following information outlines the Tracy Municipal Code regulations related to illegal signage:

Tracy Municipal Code 10.08.4510 ~ Prohibited signs and locations
The following signs shall be absolutely prohibited:
(f) Any sign unlawfully installed, erected, or maintained;

(h) Any sign which encroaches into any City right-of-way or easement, except an under canopy sign or a temporary activity sign provided for under section 10.08.4470(d) or civic organization signs as provided for under section 10.08.4460(r).

(l) Any sign located so that it interferes with visibility at an intersection, public right-of-way, driveway, or other ingress/egress;

(m) Any sign located or displayed on or over public property, except for:

(1) A banner sign approved under section 10.08.4465,
(2) A temporary activity sign provided for under section 10.08.4470(d), or
(3) A legally required traffic sign;

(n) Any sign attached to a tree;

(o) Any sign erected or maintained which has less horizontal or vertical clearance from communication lines or energized electrical power lines than that prescribed by the State or rules and regulations duly promulgated by agencies thereof;

(r) Any sign adversely affecting traffic control or safety.

Tracy strives to maintain a blight-free community, however, the public’s help and cooperation is needed in this effort.
