Starting a Small Business

Every year many new businesses open in the City of Tracy. The City strives to make the process of opening a business and obtaining the proper licenses as easy as possible. There are many things you should consider when starting a business. To assist you in your efforts, we've compiled some useful information on starting a business in Tracy. Economic Development staff members are happy to assist new businesses owners in any way possible, so please contact the department with any questions you may have.

Getting a Business License

Companies or individuals doing business in Tracy must have a valid business license. Visit the City's Business License page to learn about the different types of licenses and fees, and to download an application form. Check for Proper Zoning

All properties within the City of Tracy fall into a zoning classification which regulates the type of business activities that may occur at the site. Business owners should verify with the Planning Division that their business type is allowed in the location desired PRIOR to signing any lease agreements.

The City of Tracy Zoning Code also implements design standards related to site plan design, architecture detailing and building materials. Zoning is also used to control other development regulations, such as signage, parking and minimum yard requirements, more commonly referred to as setback requirements. Building Permits

Certain building and site improvement projects require a building permit. If you have questions on whether your project requires a building permit, you should contact the Building and Safety Division for a determination. Please note that all projects may not be allowed in all zoning designations. It is recommended that you contact the Planning Division prior to moving forward with any significant investment in your project,

To encourage the patronage of local businesses, it is the City's policy that a 10% bid evaluation pricing preference be given to businesses located within the City limits. City staff continually makes it a priority to seek vendors that are located within the City of Tracy.
