College-Level Ultimate Frisbee Comes to Tracy

Posted: Apr 18, 2012

April 18, 2012 – The City of Tracy welcomes the 2012 U.S.A. Ultimate (USAU) NorCal D-1 College Regional Qualifier Competition on Saturday, April 21st and Sunday April 22nd Approximately 500 athletes, comprising 24 teams will converge to Plascencia Fields located at the corner of 11th Street and Corral Hollow.   This is the first time a college-level competitive Ultimate Frisbee tournament is held in Tracy.

The 2012 U.S.A. Ultimate NorCal D-1 College Regional Qualifier hosts men and women’s team competitions from the regions of Humboldt to San Jose and from Santa Cruz to Nevada/Reno. Teams include both four and two year institutions.

Competing on the filed this weekend are teams from the likes of UC Davis, California Berkeley and Stanford. The 90-minute games are energetic with a constant sprint and grueling test of athletic ability and conditioning. Teams will play four games per day. According to Tournament Director Kerry Karter, Southwest Conference Coordinator for men’s USAU Division I:

“This tournament is a qualifier for Southwest Regionals. Next weekend the top finishers are in Scottsdale, Arizona. The top two finishers at that tournament will go to Nationals in Boulder, Colorado where the top 20 teams from throughout North America will compete. It has been a pleasure to work with the City of Tracy Parks and Public Works staff. Being that we are an alternative sport and not mainstream, many places do not really care to help host our events. That has not been the case here in Tracy at all. Everyone with the City has been very helpful and welcoming.”

The City of Tracy’s sports facilities continue to garner rave reviews from both local and regional users. The maturation of the Tracy Sports Complex (opened in 2002) and the renovation of Plascencia Fields (2003) plus the addition of other facilities at newer parks provides quality sports fields for a multitude of sports.

Don Scholl, Superintendent of Parks, Sports Fields & Trees notes:

“The Ultimate Frisbee event is new for us. I am excited to see it on our fields. The city appreciates seeing our fields used and something unique like this brings a new dimension to what we can offer. We will of course monitor the impacts it has on the fields and evaluate the long-term potential for competitions of this kind in the future. Additionally, a tournament of this level and size brings with it prestige and economic benefit to the City of Tracy as a whole – a positive for the entire community.”

Community members are encouraged to attend the event that starts Saturday at 9 am. For a complete schedule of games, visit the following web pages:
