Honoring Tracy’s First Black Mayor and the Display of the Pan-African Flag at City Hall for the First Time this February

Posted: Feb 8, 2021
Location: Tracy, Ca

On January 19, 2020, for the first time in Tracy history, the Tracy City Council adopted a resolution authorizing the display of the Pan-African flag at City Hall commemorating Black History Month in February.  This historic resolution was adopted following another important first in Tracy’s history that took place in November – the election of Nancy Young, our first Black Mayor.

Black History month is extra special for me this particular year because I feel that I am truly part of that history in the making,” said Mayor Nancy Young.

To hear more of Mayor Young’s remarks on Black History Month and being part of our community’s history, please watch this video.

The City of Tracy is also celebrating Black History Month through their online presence with an update of their social media profile photos to a special City logo designed for Black History Month that reflects the colors of the Pan-African flag being flown over City Hall this month.  The Pan-African flag, which has horizontal red, black and green stripes, represents people of the African diaspora, freedom and unity.

For me, it represents just a highlight, a highlight really of a group of people that helped build this country,” said Mayor Young.  “It’s an openness, inclusivity and equity that we’re striving for in our communities – not only here in Tracy, but across the country.  This is a time that truly we need to be united.”
