Arbor Day in the City of Tracy to be Celebrated With Tree Planting Event at Legacy Fields

Saturday, October 26th – Volunteer Registration: 8:30 AM, Celebration: 9 AM

Posted: Oct 17, 2019
Location: Tracy, Calif.

The City of Tracy, in partnership with the Tracy Tree Foundation (TTF), Tracy United to Make a Difference, Tracy Unified School District (TUSD) and West Coast Arborists, Inc. (WCA) will host an Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, October 26th at 9:00 a.m. at Legacy Fields, located at 4901 N. Tracy Boulevard. Volunteer registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.  The City, with the help of numerous volunteers, will plant approximately 120 trees in various areas of the sports complex to create an urban canopy and a windbreak for the children who play sports there.

Among those involved in the planting will be local dignitaries, TTF board members, Tracy’s Youth Advisory Commission members, TUSD students, City staff, volunteers organized through Tracy United to Make a Difference and other City partners.

“Tracy residents truly set the bar for community beautification and enrichment,” said John Newman, Tracy’s Arborist and Urban Forestry Supervisor.  “The number of volunteers that dedicate their time and efforts is impressive, and their work will benefit the City for years to come.  It’s truly a privilege to be a part of such an amazing community that takes great care of the environment.

Arbor Day is typically celebrated nationally during the spring; however, many communities celebrate Arbor Day at other times based on their climate and the best time to plant trees.  The City of Tracy celebrates Arbor Day in October, as the Fall weather and winter rains make this an ideal time of year to establish new trees. This will be the City’s fourth Arbor Day celebration.

“This is the third major planting event funded through the CAL FIRE and California Climate Investments - Urban & Community Forestry California Climate Investment Grant,” said Public Works Director Don Scholl.  “This day of service promises to be a rewarding experience for all involved.  Arbor Day is a great opportunity to raise awareness and support for a healthy urban forest in Tracy.  Trees provide many environmental, health and social benefits, all of which contribute to improving the quality of life in our community.”

Volunteers are encouraged to wear work clothes and gloves, and to bring shovels, steel and leaf rakes, wheelbarrows and water bottles, if possible.  Anyone interested in participating in the Arbor Day event may contact the Public Works Department at (209) 831-6300 or publicworks@cityoftracy.org for more information.  Also, please watch and share our awesome promotional video for the event created by Channel 26!
