City Departments

The City of Tracy Utilities Department provides fresh, clean water to residents and treats raw sewage from homes and businesses.

The illustration above (also available in a full-size PDF) shows approximately where the City’s responsibilities terminate and the homeowners’ begin.

Occasionally, water may have taste, odor, or other aesthetically unappealing properties. In order to better serve the residents, please review the color, taste, and odor fact sheet to the right prior to contacting the City with concerns—it offers many troubleshooting tips and can narrow down any potential issues in the City’s system in order to streamline the process. In the event you do need to report taste, odor, or color issues to the City, please call 209-831-6301 or email environmentalcompliance@cityoftracy.org.

In order to keep the home’s plumbing working properly and prevent sanitary sewer overflows, residents should be aware of what can and cannot go down the drain. Only toilet paper and body waste should go down the toilet. Everything else (such as tampons, wet-wipes, condoms, paper towels, wrappers, etc) should be thrown away, except hazardous items such as pharmaceuticals and used oil (motor and cooking).

The City and County offer pharmaceutical take-back programs throughout the year and several pharmacies offer year-round used pharmaceutical collection (controlled substances must be turned into the police station). Please see the Public Works Prescription Med page for more details.

Public Works Recycling and Solid Waste page also has information on disposing of used cooking oil (up to 5 gallons per month can be dropped off at the Tracy Materials Recovery Facility at 30703 S. MacArthur Drive in Tracy, FREE of charge!), used motor oil, and other household wastes.

For information on "ceasing the grease" in your plumbing, please see the FOG BMP to the right!

Together, we can keep our waterways cleaner!
