Updated Information Regarding Library Services Options
The San Joaquin County Public Library System contracts with the City of Stockton to provide library services in the County including Tracy. The City of Tracy owns and maintains the Tracy Library building. The library’s funding consists of City and county property taxes, City of Tracy contributions, late fees and contributions from the Tracy Friends of the Library (TFL). Over the recent years, the decline in the assessed value of properties has significantly impacted funding, and services, of the Library System.
The City of Tracy has requested that the Board of Supervisors allow the County to contract directly with the City of Tracy to offer public library services in Tracy. This change would allow for increased library hours, improved service levels, and decreased costs. The structure would allow the City of Tracy to remain in the County Free Library System and would provide Tracy with its share of property taxes.
Currently the City of Tracy is exploring options with the City of Stockton to have as seamless transition as possible. City staff is also meeting with the Tracy Friends of the Library regularly to seek input and provide them with updates.
An update, and potential action, regarding the Library is scheduled for the Tracy City Council meeting on July 17, 2012.
